Cherry Blossom in Germany

A gift of 9000 trees after the reunification of Germany has grown into a annual celebration.

To celebrate the reunification Japanese television channel TV-Ashai raised enough money from viewers for 9,000 Cherry blossom trees.

Most trees went to Berlin. But as you can see below there are many places to see the blossoms.

Make sure to keep an eye on the weather so that you can plan ahead and see the blossoms in each location at their best.

Starting in Bonn here, are some ideas for where you can find the blossoms this year.

Bonn
The Heerstrasse is Cherry Blossom Central in Bonn. The city is about 35 mins south of Cologne by car or train.

From Sennelager you can reach Bonn in about 3 hours with one stop if needed.
From the main Bonn train station (Hbf) you can walk or take a bus to Heerstrasse.

Berlin
On the Berlin Wall Trail in the former border area for hundreds of meters. Between Lichterfelde-Süd and Teltow, over 1000 trees stand along the appropriately named TV Asahi Cherry Blossom Alley.

Once a year, the longest cherry blossom avenue in Berlin and Brandenburg hosts a Hanami festival with picnics, Japanese food and a cultural program.

Dortmund
The Romerberg Park and Botanical Garden  and Moltkestraße, are the heart of the Dortmund celebrations.

On Sunday (April 2) the "Imperial Cherry Blossom Magic" will be celebrated there from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

A part of Moltkestraße will be closed to cars for this purpose, and there will also be music and painting opportunities for children.

On beer benches, visitors have the opportunity to eat and drink together - with everything being brought by the guests themselves.

Hamburg
The long-standing bond between the Japanese community and Hamburg is honored every year with the cherry blossom festival and a fantastic fireworks display over the Outer Alster.

Hamburg and the Japanese city of Osaka have been twinned for over 30 years.
5,000 cherry trees, which were planted along the banks of the Alster, the Kennedy Bridge, the Alsterkrugchaussee and on the Altona Balcony.
